Kitchell completes construction on new student services building at Modesto Junior College

MODESTO, Calif. (April 16, 2012) –With the construction completed on the new student services building at Modesto Junior College, projected to gain LEED Silver certification,  students will enjoy a more centralized, modern building.

The new 23,950-square-foot building was funded through the passing of Yosemite Community College District’s $326 million Measure E bond. The bond improvement program, which began in 2005, covers both of the District’s Modesto Junior College and Columbia College campuses. Through its aggressive program and construction management, Kitchell was able to provide the District with enough bid savings to enable the funding of more projects.

“Our relationship with Kitchell is a very positive and effective one,” said Yosemite Community College District’s Director of Facilities Tim Nesmith. “The team here was hand-picked to fit our needs. They are professional, offer good advice, and are excellent performers.”

Previously, student services functions had a number of locations spread across the East Campus. The new $17.5 million student services building centralizes most of student services to a single location, making access for students and staff more convenient. The new building also gives space back to the journalism building, a portion of the library, and East Campus student center, which were housing parts of student services.

Current projects include a Science and Community Center on the Modesto campus, and a renovation of Founder’s Hall at Columbia, which serves as the main classroom building. The new buildings will be built to LEED Silver certification, meeting requirements in energy efficiency, lower water use, interior air quality and use of recycled materials.

“Our relationship with the District illustrates the value that an experienced project management team like ours can bring to public enterprises, managing public dollars and achieving the highest quality project possible,” said Kitchell CEM President Russ Fox.

Phase One of the project, which will be located directly adjacent to Wild Horse Pass Hotel and Casino (also built by Kitchell) off Wild Horse Pass Boulevard, will include 360,000 square feet of leasable space, or approximately 90 store fronts, in nine buildings. The project is expected to create more than 300 construction jobs over the next year and more than 800 permanent jobs once the center is open. The outlets are expected to generate more than $140 million annually in retail sales.

“We are thrilled to be a part of this grand new project,” said Vice President of Kitchell Native American Division Brad Gabel. “We look forward to deepening our relationship with both Simon and the Gila River Indian Community, with whom we’ve partnered with on previous projects.”
